Second Victim: Experience and Perception of Nursing Team Professionals

Objective: To understand the experiences and perceptions of nursing professionals when facing a second victim situation. Method: A quantitative, exploratory, and descriptive study conducted between May and June 2024 at a university hospital in São Paulo, involving professionals from the Surgical Nursing Division. Data were collected online using the Second Victim Experience and Support Questionnaire. Results: A total of 46 valid responses were obtained, with a predominance of female participants (86.96%). Male participants reported greater psychological distress and a higher interest in "convenient forms of support." The majority (60.9%) preferred support from colleagues. Professionals with multiple jobs (19.57%) reported receiving less support outside the workplace. Conclusion: Although the term "second victim" is recognized by nursing professionals, emotional and institutional support remains insufficient. Further research and the implementation of support programs are recommended.
