Prevention of smoking in schools: An integrative review

Objective: To identify how smoking prevention has been conducted in school-aged children and adolescents. Method: This is an integrative literature review, carried out in Lilacs, Scielo, Pubmed, BVS, Web of Science, CINAHL and SCOPUS databases. The search for studies was carried out between June and October 2020, considering studies from 01/01/2008 to the year 2019. Result: 20 articles were selected for analysis, from which two categories emerged: Effectiveness of smoking prevention interventions in Brazilian schools and Effectiveness of tobacco prevention interventions in international schools. Conclusion: The health education programs to combat smoking developed in schools had a positive impact, highlighting the importance of the theme, the need for additional research to investigate and work on the prevention of smoking initiation in schoolchildren, in addition to reinforcing the relevance of the development of public policies aimed at this audience.
