Mediastinitis is one of the types of surgical site infection (SSI) in cardiovascular surgery, being a serious and often disastrous infectious complication. The aim of the study is to describe a local risk management protocol in surgical incision through the evaluation of a series of cases of patients who underwent cardiac surgery by longitudinal sternotomy. Method: case series with quantitative and retrospective analysis performed by consulting the electronic medical records of patients who underwent cardiac surgery with longitudinal sternotomy who used waterproof cover of Hydrofiber® Technology with ionic silver. Results: 75 medical records were analyzed, and 69 patients were included in the study, from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020. Of these, the majority were male (48), with ages between 51 and 64 years and above 65 years old, had the procedure with an average duration of 4 hours or more (95.60%) and remained, on average, 10 days hospitalized. Conclusion: no patient showed signs of SSI when using the AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL coverage (ConvaTec, United Kingdom), and this result was guaranteed after the implementation of an Incisional Risk Management Protocol.
